Mercari Tax Calculator (2026)
If you resell on Mercari for profit, your gross sales are not what you keep or what you are taxed on. Enter your sales to see your real take-home after Mercariโs 10% selling fee, the cost of the items you sold, self-employment tax, and federal income tax.
Your numbers
Runs entirely in your browser โ your numbers are never sent to a server.
Mercari charges sellers a 10% selling fee (reinstated January 2025 after a brief no-fee period). Enter what you paid for the items you sold in the cost-of-goods field below. That is usually a reseller's biggest deduction.

Your real 2026 take-home
Mind the fee change, then mind your cost of goods
Mercari brought back a 10% seller fee on January 6, 2025, after a stretch in 2024 when selling was free for sellers. If you remember the no-fee period, your math is out of date: this calculator uses the current 10% fee. The buyerโs separate service fee does not touch your proceeds, so ignore it for your own taxes.
Your biggest deduction is the cost of goods sold: what you paid for the items you sold this year. Buy a console for $80, sell it for $150, and you are taxed on the profit, not the $150. Enter your total cost of goods in the expenses field above, and the calculator subtracts it along with the 10% fee before tax. Cost of goods counts only for items you actually sold, so unsold stock is not deductible yet.
Hobby seller or business?
Selling your own used belongings for less than you paid is not taxable, and the loss is not deductible, though you still report and back out a 1099-K if you get one. Reselling for profit is a business: net profit goes on Schedule C and is subject to self-employment tax once it reaches $400. Since 2025 the federal 1099-K threshold is back to more than $20,000 and 200 transactions, but several states report at much lower amounts. Because nothing is withheld, run your numbers through the quarterly estimated tax calculator and see the full reseller picture in our Poshmark and Mercari tax guide.
These are estimates, not tax advice. State income tax is included when you select a state (2026 single-filer brackets, excluding state standard deductions and local taxes). Unusual situations belong with a CPA.
Where these numbers come from
Take-home is computed as gross sales minus Mercari's 10% fee and your cost of goods, then minus self-employment tax, federal income tax, and state income tax where selected. The rates come from these primary sources:
- Mercari Help Center, fee structure (effective January 6, 2025): the current 10% seller selling fee
- IRS, Understanding Your Form 1099-K: the $20,000 / 200-transaction threshold restored for 2025+
- IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32: 2026 federal income tax brackets and standard deduction
- IRS Topic No. 751, Social Security and Medicare withholding rates: the 15.3% self-employment tax components
Constants last verified against these sources on June 18, 2026. Every value is also pinned by an automated test suite that fails if a rate in the calculator drifts from the figure we transcribed from the source.
